i have been spending some time on this forum (as likely on move to japan will leave 964 in storage, and if buy a car in nippon it will be 86-88 911).
i posted this on 964 forum - but thought it may have some interest here
note this has nil to do with custom plate (i get no choice of plate #) but insurance status:
started the application process in April and my insurer has just confirmed collector status. It required heap of documents/ catalog of photos/ inspection/ $50 app fee.
To qualify with my insurer:
-car must be over over 25 yrs old
-or over 15 yrs old & limited edition, global production of less than 1500
-overall excellent condition & unmodified or with mods to satisfaction of insurer
-car must be accident free (as determined by direct investigation by insurance co.)
-primary driver (any permitted drivers) must be accident free for over 10yrs
-car cannot be used to work (defined casual-pleasure only)
-must be kept in locked garage or gated underground parking
what is does for me.....reduced my annual ins. premium by over 40% (now 3 digit territory!!) and have pre agreed upon valuation....means in a loss no hassle over settlement.
thanks to assistance from Porsche N.Amer, Porsche Club-valuation committee,
and Franz's WTL Register.

Just curious, Did you look into the collector car insurers like Leland West or Haggerty among others? I have my Porsches under a collector car policy with State Farm. Stated value, much reduced premiums due to limited use policy. Although, their criteria were much less stringent for obtaining the policy.

Brett, have no options in B.C.....cannot remember how long ago, but all auto insurance was taken over by
provincial gov't (Ins. Corp. of B.C.)....while its a monopoly premium rates seem relatively competitive with other canadian cities, and it does operate on a profitable basis.
in my case my annual premium reduced by about 44% to under $900 with collector approval....

"I did basically the same thing with Haggerty. All I really needed to provide, though, was photos of the car."
.....wish i had it as good and sounds like your rates - stateside are much lower. i started the application in apr., was bounced for "greater determination" of limited edition status (global production).
Porsche N.Amer of little help on this. the German registry maintained by Norbert Franz (WTL Register) and decent outline in Streather's book (complete guide to 964) did the trick.
here's link to my insurer's page dealing with the issue:
