I couldn't get enough momentum to actually roll-start the car in reverse, but once i got it started the RED oil light came on and the car made a strange whining sound. When i got home i put the car in reverse to back into my garage, and the car died, and now it will not re-start. I just bought a new battery today so i know that it isn't a battery issue. Any ideas?

so i have to ask .. do you drive it with the oil light on ? and this strsange sound ? .. if so your engine could be toast .. what did you have for oil pressure on the guage ? and why did you start it this way .. there is WAY more to this story i can see..

yea... I dont get it
new battery and its? dead... I would start by checking the connections on that new battery.

then whats the battery have to do with the oil light
and you dont have another means to start the car than compression starting....

what does it do if you try to turn it over with the key?

Did you push it backwards and drop into a forward gear?

check your output voltage. You may have an overvolt charging alternator goofing up the lights. Peter Z went over this in another thread last week.

Check all of your dash lights and make sure that you do not have any that are out. I ran into this on my 69. The charging system is all tied together with the dash lights. If one of them is out it will not charge correctly and your red oil light will not go out after you get the car started.

Seems weird but it worked for me.

Sorry for never clearing this up. In short my alternator wasn't working. I had it rebuilt and everything is fine, except for the hot start problems. The fuel distributor isn't functioning properly so I'm getting the UTCIS-V from UnWiredTools. Pete says "...warm, as well as hot s= starts are perfect," but i have yet to experience that. I'm hoping the new regulator will nip this problem in the bud, and I can experience some smooth sailing once again.

This reminds me of when I once bump started an old corolla in reverse. (tricky to do because of the low low gear ratio) Drove it home no problem... the next morning I started it up, put it in first gear and the car went backwards! I had to drive all the way to work in reverse!
