Post Price check on 1980 911SC

I'm thinking of getting a 1980 911 SC coupe with 83k miles on it. It has no rust and seems to run fine. Anyone know what it's worth? The bluebook doesnt seem to go back that far.

Check out this month's Excellence. They list the values for a 80 Coupe from 11826(poor) to 18000(excel). These values seem to rather wide, but different geographic areas have their own base prices. I would also seek a good P-Car mechanic's opinion. I bought my car for a song and a dance, but now I am so upside down on the thing that I'll never get out. It's like eating salted peanuts, I can't stop cause I love it so.

If your new to the Porche world I can not over sell you on the importance of a good PPI. This Pre Purchase Inspection can save you literally thousands and thousands of $. A small investment worth its weight in gold. Find a good reputable repair shop in your area. Make sure the shop knows the SC model and has experience with earlier Porsche's. In my experience I have found that alot of the "dealers" are not as knowledgable about older models as a good independant shop. You can probably contact you local owners club and get some good recommendations. Good Luck and the SC cars are great.

I concur that you should DEFINITELY check out the Excellence article. If you want, I could scan and email you the relavent article if you can't find the magazine yourself. Let me know if you need that assistance.

Go to www.kbb.com. They go back to 1981. I know yours is a 80 but it will at least give you a pretty good estimate on a fair price. Worst case: compare price on an 82 to an 81 and take off the same amount for going back to 1980.

Good luck,

Adam

Seth,
Don't be too concerned about mileage on the SC's. After they have had their crucial updates, they are a pretty tough car.
Your example of an 1980 with 83k is in the ball park anyway. Just remember that a 20+ year old car will have some repair issues regardless of the mileage. There is nothing magical (or even desirable) about finding some garage-queen that never gets regular exercise.

I think it's important to note, Porsches do not fare well in the hands of mechanically unsympathetic owners. If you can find a car that was owned and cared for by a knowlegible enthusiast, you will likely be very satisfied with your purchase.
