Porsche 911 Cosmetic Question
I've been looking at some SCs and 3.2s recently and I've noticed some cosmetic differences on some headlights.
Does anyone know why the SC's headlights are more "cyclinderish" and the other Carreras have headlights that are more round and more built into the hood?
Also what is the production number of a non turbo 930, from what I've read 930s are the turbo version of the classic 911 and I can't find the regular production code.
EX.

Carrera 3.2 had the seal beamed headlights as you describe just like the sc's lights up until 1986 then in 1987 they switched to an H5 light as you see in your first picture. You can get that updated look on the older cars but ordering a set of H4 lights and ring set that goes around the new light assembly. I did this to my 1986 when I first bought her. Production codes I can't help you on, as I'm not sure what your asking for. I call tell you the 911 turbo was re-introduced into the American market in 1986 which took a lapse after the 1979 model year. Cars in this country that are 930 turbos from 1980-1985 are all euro grey market cars. 1976-1979 they were imported to the US and from 1986-1989. They switched to the model designation from 930-911 turbo in 1986.

Your first picture shows "European" headlights on that black car. These lights either come as H4's or H1's. H1's have a separate high beam bulb with it's own reflector and is adjustable. Technically, these are illegal to use on US roads. Although very rare, I've heard of people getting tickets for using these.
The H5's came standard on the Carreras had a similar look to the H1 and H4 light. However, it is not the same light and they were legal for use in the US.
IMO, I think the Euro headlights look MUCH better than the US spec sealed beam units.

The production code on the turbo-bodied car that does not have the turbo is an M491 option code. It was ordered as a regular Carrera with M491 option. There are a lot of other details involved with the 491 option and those that are more knowledgeable should chime in.

Moff; If you have the 8th Edition of my book check page #109.
Option codes will be found on a white sticker applied to the underside of the front trunk lid. A factory Turbo-Look car will include "M491" on that sticker, and the car will be fitted with Turbo suspension, brakes and wheels, but will have a standard 3.2 liter Carrera engine and transmission (915 from '84-86).

my '84 came with sugar scoop headlight rings (the cylinderish looking style) and the bulging sealed beam headlights. I changed the sealed beam units for H4 "motorcycle" headlights. You can tell these from sealed beams because the lens is flat, compared to sealed beam lights, which are convex. They fit perfectly inside the sugar scoops, and provided vastly more light, especially on low beam.
When I joined my local PCA chapter in 2000, I noticed that EVERYONE had converted to "Euro" H4s. I looked at their 911s, and my 911, and back at their 911s, and so on. I decided that I needed those cool Euros.
When I put them on, including the painted trim ring over the primered headlight, they looked cool, but there was not any more light from them than the H4 motorcycle light with sugar scoops.

I am opting to stay with the sugar scoops... and spend the money on DE's and other mods like spare wheel/tire set and maybe some torsion bars and better shocks, and.........

I'm restoring a 74 right now and am torn between keeping the sugar scoops or upgrading. I like the look of the sugar scoops but want to be able to see at night. I may look into what Rusnak did.

I've run the sealed beam replacement H4s for many years. They look stock, and provide great light!

Here they are:
There is a number on the glass lens (1 305 603 038), but that might be the part# for the lens, I don't know. They are very nice - a quality piece by Bosch.
