1986 Carrera Whale Tail

1986 Carrera Whale Tail
Bought a 1986 Carrera, white with beautiful factory side stripes. The only thing missing I feel is a whale tail. Any thoughts on how to get it, where from, can i get a factory original, any other after market recommendations?
I am told the best way is to get it and then professionally repaint it. One estimate I got was 2K, which I think is ridiculous - IS IT?

I would search for a factory tail for sure. Panorama magazine in the classifieds sometimes you will see them or just call dc parts in NC. They should have one. Remember you need the front lip spoiler as well. Get those from pelican parts. Try pelican for rear tails also. Must get it painted professionally ESP if your car is clean. 2k should be for all new hardware.

I read the Frere book on 911s, and the part about the tails, and how the Carrera tail improved cooling and lessened lift. I had to have one all of a sudden. I was on a mission.
So, I bought one from the Pelican Parts classifieds, and for $800 I got a rear decklid without latch, complete factory tail with wiper and wiper motor, and for maybe another $500 I got both re-painted. I can research exact costs if you want to know.
I think there is a thread on Pelican about my tail installation, complete with pics of the wiring and installation of the dash switch.
I got pissed at Rennlist, and deleted my entire pic library, so if I did one on Rennlist, it's gone now.

Now that we're off topic about RL, what caused the mass exodus around 2002/2003 from RL to Pelican.
I've seen comments on PP about a situation that caused the move. I was distracted by a money sucking 928 at the time and didn't read the 911 forums.
Curious...
PS: Doyle, I just saw a VH-1 Classic Concert series with Rush in Rio around 2000...... Awesome show. I'm still amazed how tight those guys are live.

I've got a factory Carrera tail for my 86'... Never got around to installing it. $850 if you're interested.

Rear spoiler
I have an '86 as well and also wished to have the rear spoiler and front spoiler. I purchases a rear spoiler and began prepping it for paint. I then got on here (rennlist) and it was recommended that I seek out a tail and rear deck lid combo. As opposed to the drilling into my then current deck lid....I found a tail & deck lid (found several online at the time) and it was installed in 15 minutes after a proper paint match via 4 bolts. I still have the standard deck lid if I ever get the desire to go back to the non tail look. Easy is good. Just some food for thought.
Best of luck,

Keep in mind that some tails need some work to fit correctly. It takes several hours of labor to make it right. If you wind up with a tail that is neither a duck tail nor a Carrera RSR tail then the work to fit it is substantially less.
