I got Toyo Proxy's 4.5 years ago when I first got my 88 911 coupe. Now it's about 19,000 miles later and they are obviously starting to wear... - ok, they're worn! My repair shop owner said I could drive the car another 5,000 the way it is now, that many an owner would, but the tires wouldn't even pass Maryland inspection. He also added that the car could be a bit "squirrely" in wet weather.
I almost exclusively drive it when I know in advance it will be dry as a bone. It's my daily driver for clear weather only. I drive my 95 740i if it's raining.
I'm already at my pre-alotted $2000 per year repair budget for the car for 2002, so I'm going to try and wait till 2003 to put the new tires on I guess. The shop said they have switched to a new tire that they like better than the Toyo's, but I can't remember the name... I think it was Goodrich ABS's (?) or something like that. Anyone know what's a great tire to put on this car in 2003 or sooner? I need something that's particularly good in the wet, and I'm willing to sacrifice a degree of comfort to achieve that! I get VERY nervous driving the car in the rain, as I had a accident with a set of Dunlops (8000's ?) that were on the car when I first bought it. I'd only had it a month and spun out on a straight-a-way and almost killed myself! That ole rear end spun around terribly. I was ready to get rid of my "dangerous" car right there and then. I need a tire that's great in the wet, so if I get caught in the unexpected thunderstorm or wet weather on a long trip or small vacation, I can drive with confidence and not be so nervous that the car will spin out like it did before.
Thanks in advance,
Steve

Steve:
Two friends have the Yokohama AVS Sports on their 911s. Both love the tires. Great in dry conditions, super in wet conditions. They are cheaper than Bridgestone S02s and supposedly will last longer. I have heard that the Khumo Ecsta 712s are great wet/dry street tires and they are priced well below the Bridgestone and Yokohamas. My only experience with them was riding with a student at Potomac's DE at Mid Ohio last year. The Khumos were great in the rain and pretty good in the dry. Tire Rack has info on them on their website www.tirerack.com. (no affiliation, just pointing out a place on the web to get information). The price will make the treasurer happy.

I usually get about 20 hours on a set of RA1s at the track, less when we are doing an enduro, we once burned through a set in less than 12 h uors in a 12hour enduro....and about 10K miles on the road.

one more thing...RA1s make great rain tires, I put them on in the fall here in CA and drive them in the rainy season, and burn off the tread in the summer. So new RA1s would be great for you in the rain. I have also tried Yoko A032Rs in the rain and did not like them at all.

Harry: To answer your question, the type of tire was the Toyo Proxy T-1's. I love them as they lasted soooooo long. Apparantly 19,000 miles is alot for tires on a 911?
I wonder what the most amount of miles someone has gotten from a pair of tires on a 911, and the car was still safe to drive?
