I recently purchased a 1985 Carrera. It sounds like popcorn popping when I drive. My Porsche mechanic said it has solid (steel I presume) body to chassis mounts. He said people do that for better times at the track. The car runs and handles beautifully, but it is noisy wth the constant "crack, rattle, and pop". Does this explaination sound right. Is there a quick fix, lube, rubber or silicone shot around the monts? He said I could change the body mounts but it's expensive. Thank you
I think he may be referring to engine and transmission mounts or suspension bushings (polybronze perhaps) being solid. The 911 is unibody car and no mounts.
I'm sorry, maybe it is the engine and trans mounts, or suspension bushings. He said it would be at least $1,000 to replace the solid ones. Is there a cheaper , even if a temporary, fix?
I got solid engine and tranny mounts in mine and it doesn't sound like rice crispies going down the road. I'm thinking Doug's more likely on it with CV-joints.

Given that all of the hardware including mounts, bolts, and washers are about $50-$60 each, is he charging about $800 in labor?
Thinking about this some more....have you looked at the rear sway bar mounts and are the links and bushings in good shape? Are they loose (rattling)?
You could spray some aerosol Tri-flow or some silicone on the rear sway bar links and bushings, then drive the car. If the noise persists, try the spring plate bushings. If still you hear the noise, pull the axles and inspect the CV joints.
