Default Correct Oil Pressure Level???

Hi Guys:

I have an oil pressure question. I have a 1970 911T 2.2L. When the car is cold the oil pressure gauge reads just under 4. After the car warms up it reads 2 at cruise and just under 1 at idle. Is this ok or is the oil pressure to low?? The car currently has 5w30 oil in it, and when it gets hot the oil runs like water off the dip stick. I was thinking about going to heaver oil, SAE 40 or SAE 50. What do you guys recommend??

Thanks: Fantor

5W 30 is way too light for our cars. Depending on where you live, but at least in Summer, 20w-50 is the best choice. In colder climes during winter, you may go to something like a 5w-40 or 5w-50.

Valvoline VR1 and Brad Penn are two great 911 oils.

20W/50 is the right weight for you. The pressures stated are pretty good, and you might not experience much change by switching viscosity (which should be done anyway), but there will always be some variance between cars, and gauges. Do you know if your car has updated oil line adaptors?

Peter I am not sure if the engine has updated oil line adaptors. I was told the enigne was completly rebuilt from top to bottom befor I bought the car.

So a reading of 1 at idle is ok then???

Yes, "1" (aka about 14 psi) is OK. Please check photo in post #16 of the LINK referenced in post #6 of this thread. You can see the adaptors, located at the outboard end of each cam oil line, without part removal, and will be able to tell, per the picture, if you have the new style adaptors.

Fantor... go and change the oil this weekend and report the new #'s

PLUS

the current number is not too low at idle when hot....

get some Brad Penn or VR1 20w/50 (a case of it) and a really big oil pan with a really big opening cus the oils is gonna come out fast, and there is a lot of it

Pete - here is the pic and

This might be a stupid question... But is there any difference between 20w50 oil and SAE 50 oil??? I just want to make sure I put the right oil in my car.

Thanks: Fantor
