Just caught this thread for the first time . I am the other side of the lake so we have similar climate. I don't even have A/C and don't miss it except for maybe 5 days a year max when it is just to hot and sticky. I think you did the right thing. if you lived in Texas Florida , or on the sun , i would say fix it .. other than that i don't think it is worth the price and hassle to fix.
