Default Test for Oil Temp Sender & Gauge

I am not sure that my Oil Temp gauge or sender is working.

What is a simple test for basic mechanic to determine if it is working.

I have a multi meter but would need detailed instructions to guide me.

My gauge hardly moves up at all. Seldom get or that a 1/16" above the bottom red. Starts at the top 1/16" of the red.

are you sure we are talkiing temp sender and not oil level ? can't quite undierstand your last line but i think only the level has red at the bottom. Anyway you should be able to put the ignition on and disconect the wire from the sender. When you do this you should get full deflection of the needle at the guage. When you ground it it should deflect completely in the opposite direction. If this works it is probably the sender.
I had this isue on my oil level sender , i replaced it and it is bang on. I even top up my oil using the guage ..

Iceman,
Nope it is the Oil Temp gauge. Mine has a red bar about 1/2" at the bottom and a red bar about 1/4" at the top. Mine stays at the bottom.

My oil level gauge works perfectly.
Thanks for the testing procedure.

okay well you can test the same way disconect it and see what the needle on the guage does, then ground it against the engine and see what the needle does. ..it is the one on the pasenger side of the fan housing that is horizontally situated .. sorry about the confusion i caused , i replaced that guage with the numbered one.
