Default Intermitant Speedometer

Hello,

My 1987 911 Carrera was used only 10-12 times during the past 18 months due to an overseas assignment. Now that I began using the car weekly, the speedometer and odometer only begin to work after I have driven the car 3-6 miles. I believe that the speedometer on the 1987 911 is electronic (not cable driven).

Would somebody have an idea what the problem may be or where I should start to look at? Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,
Angelo

My 87 Carrera did the same thing, worked after a few miles, then progressed to working every so often, to not at all. Could be in the sending unit or the speedo head. I had the speedo rebuilt first, odometer also failed, which did not resolve my problem. Results came when we replaced the sending unit located at the trans. Hope this helps.

My '87 had a different problem that turned out to be a bad ground connection.

Rmurph & Pmgoodwin,

Thank you for your feedback. I am going to look into both of these areas.

Pmgoodwin,

Question: where were you having the bad ground connection.

Thank you,
Angelo
