Caliper rebuild
Was going to replace the front disc pads on my 82 911 sc. Pulled them out and looked at the Caliper itself. Dust boots looked in bad shape. Any consensus on doing my own rebuilt, buying rebuilt or buying new? This will not be a race machine, so not interested in upgrading.

Don't know whether you are planning to to the work yourself.
To get calipers rebuilt - say $100.
Caliper rebuild kit - $20
New calipers - say $175.
I just had mine rebuilt. On reflection, I'd spend the additional $75 or so per wheel and get new.
Depending on the condition, I wouldn't ever bother rebuilding myself because
1) it is a filthy job even if you do have the facilities to clean everything
2) you are as likely as not to get something apart and find that you need something you don't have. Pitted piston, caliper rusted, who knows. Not worth the car down time while you get the parts and the overal hassle to save the money.
Just my opinion.

You have several choices. Rebuilding them yourself is pretty easy - you're just swapping out rubber seals. The only caveat is to be sure the groove inside the caliper is clean, as it can fill with crud over time. You can exchange them for rebuilt calipers at Vertex and others, or you can buy new. I've rebuilt SC calipers a few times, and they aren't difficult to do. I guess the other caveat is that you are dealing with your brakes. If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, have a professional do it for you.
