This may seem a little odd but are there any kits to retrofit 911's with airbags?
I have to buy my daughter a car in a couple of years and I just came across a 912 that would be a nice restoration project for us. It would be a cool car, not to much power and, since she will have helped build it she'll take care of it. I don't want a repeat of what her brother did to my old A6 when I got a 997.
But, I'm not getting her a car without airbags.
The only other requirement is something she can track. She's planning on going to A&M and with me going to DEs every 6 weeks at TWS she'll want to be there as well.

IMO it would be better and safer to buy a car that is already equiped and tested with the correct airbags - you are asking for trouble to retro-fit these (IMO)
if you know something about the early boxsters or 996's they can be had cheap... there are ways to make them a great, long lasting car and they come with ABS and airbags..... Boxster is around $10k for an early one
just a thought

As mentioned above, buy a car with one, that has been engineered by a manufacturer and tested ad nauseum to ensure its effectiveness.
Buy her a Boxster or Cayman, or BMW.

The original plan was to buy her a Boxster for the above reasons.
We had been talking about this and one day we were driving and she says "Daddy, I don't think I like the looks of the Boxster." I said okay and a little while later we found ourselves next to one at a light. I said you don't like that. She said Oh, I thought you meant the box shaped (Scion xB) car... that I like.

Boxster, hands down. Autos are REAL cheap to buy in a 2.5 engine.
Airbags came with the 964, later 944s, 968s 928S4s after 89, and a bunch of others.
Later e36 BMWs, 85 + Miatas.
Honestly, a Honda makes a good first car, or a Nissan. Cause if you don't know the difference between a Scion box and a Boxster, do you really want to be driving a fast and hairy 911 without ABS and a tail happy rear engine.
Picture boyfriend lifting throttle in rain. Honda sounds good now, doesn't it ?

sorry to go OT on this subject...
I think Honda's are great cars. I know they have many great aspects. I just had a really bad experience with one when I was a teen and being a stuburn jack-a$$ I just wont ever go back. The ALL remind me of that time..
sorry again, back ON T

2.5 Boxster seems like a great first car.
Even a late 944S2 or 968 would be a good "Porsche" first car, Airbags, comfortable, perfect handling. expensive to maintain

968 was my first P-car. Drove it for 8 years with almost no issues and I can't think of one bad thing to say about it. Plus, you're in TX (I'm in FL) she will appreciate how well the a/c works over the 912. I was also able to carry 4 people when needed and tons of storage in the back, especially with seats down.
