Noob just picked up an 85 911
Just wanted to introduce myself. I am a working service manager in a busy independent auto shop in MD. I am way out of my element with this car. It is not that I can't work on them, I have wrenched on too many over the years. I just finished building a lifted YJ wranger and before that I built a blown 81 Z28. It is not what I am used too. The gentleman I got the car from bought it 2 years ago for 12K. I suppose he was going through his midlife crisis. He paid too much and has put few miles on the car. The car was supposed to have a new clutch but it is now shot, I suspect the pressure plate is the issue. Also the fresh air fan caught fire melting the fresh air intake and hoses. He dropped it off Monday and asked if I wanted to buy the car. He said I had no choice because he wasn't ever picking the car back up. So I picked up the car for a couple grand. The paint is worn but will buff out. There is 139K on the clock but the motor is leak free and runs great. I am not a Porsche guy and am not up on my Porsche knowledge. I need to find a place to pick up some used parts. I am also not sure about the rear spoiler, I haven't see that type before. He are a few bad phone pics. I will get better later this week.

Wow that has to be the steal of the century .. you will find this car easy to work on compared to other , the engine will come out in about an hour with the gearbox on it so the clutch will be a breaze with yourexperience.
DO some searcheds , partsheaven or DC automotive will have the ducting. I amnot a big fan of that tail either but there are those who like it.

That's not a Carrera tail, it's an early Turbo or Euro 3.0 tail which is not original to the car. Or, it could be aftermarket. Might be worth some bucks if it's a factory piece. That accounts for why the paint on the the deck lid doesn't match the rest of the car. I'd replace the entire tail and decklid with a correct used one without a tail.
The car definitely needs some TLC and to be cleaned up, but for $2K you got a smoking deal. The engine alone is worth more than that even with its mileage.

You stole it, bro'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mucho help to be had here,..be damned sure you're up on the basics with this animal,...don't want to start by over-filling the oil, for example...many other nuances, as well.

Thanks guys. I love the car. The paint is not the greatest but will buff out nice. I am planning on a repaint myself. I will have to go through the trans it feels like a few sycronizers have had it. But that gives me a chance to detail the engine. I don't hate the wing but what drives me crazy is the 2 carriage bolts on each side of the carrera badge. I will have to look closer how it is mounted. My goal at first is just to get it back to road worthy condition so I can drive it for the summer.

Sell the tail - no tail or a duck on a targa. It's a euro model - smaller bumperettes side markers - higher compression and MORE HP Woo woo. Make sure the accelerator cable is activation the WOT switch - makes a huge difference in performance. Looks like H-4's - those are great - just make sure they have relays - search marcus sucro relay or daniel stern lighting.
Carreras are great cars - if you drop the engine (basically four bolts) switch out the carrera fuel line, cylinder head temp sensor and reference sensors - all important for the DME to do it's job.

Since no one has said it, I will. From all appearances, you have a RoW aka Eurospec car. That is evident by the Euro side markers and small rear bumperettes. Once you put your car on the lift, you should see a cooler connected to your tranny and it is most likely a lsd. Your RoW motor also has more hp than the US car due to higher compression. RoW cars start with a WP0ZZZ VIN.

That's a Rest of World car, alright, but it may not have the more powerful engine.
windsoreight, you should have an option sticker under the hood. Look at the line for the engine number.
If it reads "930-21," you have the North American, lower compression engine putting out 200 hp SAE net.
If it's "930-20," then you have the more powerful high-comp European mill with 231 hp.
Some of these RoW cars were fitted at the factory with catalytic converters, either for N.A. importation or in the case of some German cars, to get tax breaks in their home country.
Have fun cruising the Eastern Shore this summer!
