Post Suspension upgrade in progress...

I am upgrading the suspension on my 1983 SC, and have but one question: what type (brand) of rear sway bar to buy?

In the front I have 22m Sway away t bars, black 'track compound' bushings, Bilstein HD inserts, and a 22mm Weltmeister sway bar.

In the back I have 28 mm Sway away Tbars, Sway away adjustable spring plates, and Bilstein Sport shocks. Lately, AJ USA has offered a great price on their 22mm rear bar, which looks to be a higher quality part than the Weltmeister. I know there are others, but they typically cost twice what these do. Anyone have compelling reasons one way or the other?

Thanks,

Ian Faass

Sounds like you're headed in the right direction. Check out Charlie Bars and the Sway bars from The Racer Group. Both are really high build quality and have a lot of built in adjustability. The TRG Bar has a cool feature that allows you to purchase the Torsion bar part of the sway bar system only if, for any reason you want to change the bar in favor of something w/ less or more stiffness than the original system. Could save you a lot of money if you ever want to change sway bar flex rating, you don't have to buy the whole kit.

FWIW, I had the Weltmeister rear sway bar installed, and it worked fine. I do know of one racer where one of the rear vertical fittings on his Weltmeister sway bar broke.

Weltmeisters are find for 95% of 911 drivers. They're not particularly robust, not easy to adjust, and the geometry isn't great. But again, for most drivers, getting nit-picky about the finer points of the swaybars is not necessary.

Smart Racing makes great bars.
