Default I finally got tired of having my front trunk dropping on my head.

I replaced my hood shock about 4 years ago. They don't work right when the weather is cold (~50 degees F). I have seen a few hood prop solutions for sale. But being an engineer type, I wanted to make my own.

I went to a local junk shop and removed a support from a junked domestic car ($8, including the bracket & nuts). Lowe's had an aluminum angle ($4) which I bought, cut and modified to accomodate support.

The fabrication and installation took about 2 hours. It works great!

What do you think?

I hate dealing with those front hood shocks. Nice job on your hood support - I use one from Snap On that's made for mechanics to use in shops. At one point the back of my head had a dent shaped like the upper latch on a 911 trunk lid!

Default Butzip, I replaced them once already. I even used the HD version.

They don't seem to last any longer (I got 4 years from them). This was much easier than going through that drama again. Plus, it is a permanent fix.

Looks good/functional,..

I'd still opt for the beefed-up factory mounts (in the end),..a sense of permanence, as tone40 alluded to,...

Tone40? interesting? to do with tone and, possibly, 40 watts???????????? Axe?

Best,

Doyle

Default Doyle, the creation of my screen name is not as elaborate as you suggest...

The first time I had to come up with a screen name and it had to be a combination of letters and number. I have just turned 40 and tony40 was taken.

I see how you come up with that considering you are a sound engineer.

Good idea ... I wish I had thought of it before I purchased new shocks. Good Job!

I've had this piece sold by Sherwood @ Seine Systems for a few years now. Pretty cheap at $40, no fab needed, it only weighs a few ounces AND I can say I have something made of carbon fiber on the car.

It lays right down on my strut brace when the bonnet is shut.

(Did I mention I've got the shift gate kit too?)

Nice job. I almost did the same thing but caved in and bought "heavy duty shocks"....we will see how long they will last.

Nice job! I remember years ago, Automotion used to sell hood shocks with a lifetime warranty. If they "die", they would be replaced for free. I'm not sure if those still exist anymore. Doing a quick search, i couldn't find them. Short "lifetime" warranty I guess!

RS hood-support kit ...from the 964 cup car, IIRC. A prop-rod with snap-in holder. I ordered it years ago from Sunset. I put it into my SC Trackmeister ...it is so simple and flat-out effective. I wonder if it is still available.

I think it's a rite-of-passage to have the back of your head cracked by the hood, then to go through the fuss of replacing the hood shocks.... only to notice the new high pressure hood shocks getting softer by the month! Having gone through that- this is absolutely the next plan for when the new shocks finally give up the ghost - afterall it's easier than using your head to hold the hood up.
