Design Origins of the Targa?

I've always thought the design of the targa top was pretty unique: Porsche went in a direction that didn't have an obvious precedent. (for that matter, there weren't many copycats either!)
I recently discovered the Raymond Loewy-designed Jag 140 built by Boano. It no longer exists, but apparently it is well known. the B pillar treatment and rear window is a dead-on accurate foreshadowing of the first generation Targas. I wonder if there is any documentation that makes a direct connection? Kind of cool to think the targa owes it's origins to an American industrial designer and an Italian Carrozzeria
