Yes, I have done it. They sell repair tape at auto parts stores. You just have to cut it to he right size and lay it across the gap. If it doesn't work the first time try it again. Make sure the surfaces are clean, I used alcohol and a Q-tip. I think they also make a metal paint like nail polish that I have heard also works. It is a very simple system you just have to complete the loop so electrical current will flow.

As far as the paint, you can get this at any decent Auto Parts Store. I have repaired a few defrosters with it, works great but a bit messy. One tip, the brush they give you sucks. Go to a place that has paint brushes for artists and get a 4/0 or 5/0 brush.

Sorry I don't remember the brand of repair tape. I last did this fix quite a while ago.
