Jacking Up My 964
Hey group: I need your good advice today . I'm needing to jack up the front of my 964 (1990 C-4 Cab) to do some work. I use a floor jack, as the stock jacks are always a problem, and I'd rather not remove it anyway. They're more problems to re-store than they're worth. Here's my question: The jackpoints in the front of the car (holes) do not fit the top of the jack. The jack top is round, but larger than the hole, and of course, even if it did line up, then how could I get the jackstands under the same points while the car was jacked up? I have heard of using things like phone books, but I would like any advice on this subject from anyone who jacks their cars up with regularity. Can you tell me exactly where to place the jack, and where to place the jackstands. I don't want to damage the car, of course, and it just seems like everywhere I look underneath the car, there is some plastic covering that will get damaged if I simply jack up the car using the standard jack points. Thanks, in advance. Mick Emeson.
Did I wander into the wrong forum? Here's what I do on my '84 911. At the rear, I (for now) use the engine case and very very slowly raise the rear and then very very slowly set it down on jackstands placed under the rear torsion bar covers. I guess on a 964 you'd use the jack pad dimples, like they have on the 914.
At the front I use two floor jacks, and raise the left and right side together, then lower the car onto jackstands placed under the steering crossbeam. The reason I use two floor jacks is to not put too much torsion on the body of the car. The car is old, and it does not make sense to twist the body more than I need to.
