Question How long can a motor sit?

So let's say I'm thinking of building an RS replica out of my '72T (which I am). And it needs a little body work and paint work (which it does). But before I can get to this the perfect '84 - '89 Carrera donor car comes along (which is yet to be determined). If I were to buy said donor car...how long can a good motor sit before it goes bad? I would imagine for me to get the rest of the work done on the car may take up to (and beyond?) two years! But if a motor is going to rot away, then I would either have to 1) get the project done faster or 2) hold off on the donor car.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Definitely get the project done sooner! Actually a motor can last a long time in storage if prepared properly. Check the tech. areas for specifics but essentially you want to start w/clean oil (dry sumps do hold oil), spray oil in the cylinders, drain carbs or anything else that holds gas, cover chrome, stainless w/a protective covering. Cover all exhaust ports or anything else that leads inside the motor. Some suggest backing the value adjusters off so there is no tension on the value springs or cam lobes. Keep the whole shooting match covered & store in a cool dry place. Every few months rotate the motor by hand a few times & re oil the cylinders. If the motor is more than a few years old you might as well “refresh” most of the gaskets before installing or it will leak from everywhere until the gaskets “soften” after a few heat cycles.

If the donor comes along might you not be better off to have the motor in storage conditions you control rather than having your donor moter being used possibly in stressful ways or sitting in some salvage yard?

Good point Tom. Looks like the concensus is to get the project done sooner!

So...can I borrow a few bucks....?
