Heat alternatives...
Hi all,
I need some recommendations on heat alternatives. '80SC without heat. I want to know what you guys (without heat exchangers) do to get heat in your car. I know not everyone has an alternative, but just wondering if someone can recommend an electric heater to run in car that works pretty good. Or am i the only one?

I have heard of two electric hair dryers installed in the fresh air ducting with an on/off switch wired in to the dash.
Some older 911's apparently came with a gas heater installed in the trunk area, although I've never seen one.

I think I actually saw this in Excellence as part of the 914 3.6 project. That builder really did a beautiful job on that car, nothing redneck about it.
How about a 996 engine swap complete with a water pump and heater core? (yep, now I'm pulling your chain)

I've not had heat hooked up in 2 years, and I never have my top on. A brisk drive up the mountain keeps my mind off the cold feet. And yes, in the back country in can get in the 30's in the mornings this time of year, and when I lived in Dallas, it got a bit colder than that.
If you want heat and you have headers, you're going to have to consider a solution such as TT has suggested. Anything is going to be foreign to the 911's design.

I went back and looked up the Excellence article and the 914 project actually used heated seats as its only heating system. They were in the neighborhood of $600 apiece. The redneck hairdryers must have been some other project car..........can't remember.

I run a Firstgear heated jacket liner on the bikes when I start feeling pre-hypothermic. It's great. However, the socks that I got as a gift a few Christmases ago are just too hot for me. (Plus, I don't go out with her anymore.) The socks are yours if you want them. Worn once over other socks. http://www.derbycycles.com/cgi-bin/e...x.cgi?pid=3215
You'll need something like this: http://www.derbycycles.com/cgi-bin/e...erbing&count=1
or you could run it into your cig lighter
or even go all out w/a thermo-dial: http://www.derbycycles.com/cgi-bin/e...erbing&count=1

Inexpensive solution: heated seat pads. They're $20 a seat. The downside is that you still don't have any defog/defrost capability.
Middle solution: have someone weld heat exchangers around your exhaust, like Porsche did. No downside.
Expensive solution: A gasoline heater. Webasto/Eberspacher still make them for truck drivers. The downside is that you'll probably add more weight than heat exchangers.
