Post Tachometer acting funny......

On my way to work today, the tach did something very strange. As I started down the road (the car had not completely warmed up yet), the tach suddenly quit and dropped to zero. Then after a couple of seconds, it began working as normal and continued with no issues. This happend once before as well, a couple of months ago.

Any ideas? Should I be concerned? I had the engine out for tranny work a while ago. Could it be that the cable was not connected back correctly?

Suggestions and ideas welcome.

Regards,
Jim

Jim
I had the same problem in my 81sc, awhile back.
The only thing it did was got worse. I checked everyting, cleaned all connections and fixed it by buying a unit on e-bay. Problem solved.

You also may check your transmission ground strap?

I have this same problem on my '85. Sometimes the tach works fine, sometimes she just sits and looks sad. Same thing w/ my oil level guage. Seems like a loose conenction somewhere for both. I have not had the time to look into either - yet! Let me know how you fare!

The tach in my '80 SC started going haywire. Turned out to be a failing alternator. Note: This is probably NOT you problem. A failed alternator is evident pretty immediately--like you're driving along and the battery goes dead!

Vex,
My oil level sender was acting strange as well. I took off the right rear wheel allowing access to the sender unit. I disconnected the two wires cleaned the terminals and wire ends then reconnected. Works like a champ now. Very easy. This may be the same issue with my tach. I hope to take a look this weekend at the connections as a source of the problem as suggested by a few on this thread.

Saw picks of your 85, very sweet!

Regards,
Jim

Sometimes this is a sign that your CD box is getting ready to give you problems.
