Post Porsche Parts Vs. OEM (Plug Wires).

For an '87 Carrera, I am searching for spark plug wires. I ran across a set of Magnecors for $132.00. Not wanting to waste my $100.00 PCA Member Gift Certificate, I contacted a Porsche dealer who quoted $596.00 for the wires. Am I missing something? A premium I understand. But is this an example of across the board Porsche parts costs? And might anyone comment on the Magnecors as being fine for the car? Thanks. I appreciate it. Dan

Magnecor's are fine wires. If they only made them for 3.6L engines Sounds like the dealer is quoting you list, you can get 25% off that easily from several dealers (Reeves in Tampa, Hendrick in Charlotte, etc). However, that still doesn't get you close to Magnecor's.

In terms of Porsche parts prices, again, if you use dealers that discount roughly 25%, you'll find many of the Porsche parts prices are even below what discounters sell OEM parts for, and you do get the 2 year parts warranty (which I've used on a fanbelt that broke prematurely). However, that said, there are still some Porsche parts whose prices are mystifying, or as one parts person said, must be made from unobtanium.

The magnecors are a very popular upgrade on the 3.2 Carrera. I just installed some on mine about a month ago. Pelican Parts sells the ones that fit you car for $159.00 and you can find them here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/autocat/load_page.cgi?page_number=1&bookmark=-0&model=911M&currsection=911REC

Do a search on the Pelican board and you will find a couple of threads that discuss the installation. One thing you will have to do is drill out the wire hold downs to fit the larger Magnecor wires. Not a big deal. I believe a 5/16" drill bit in the drill press takes care of the hold downs.

Rufer: Recently put Magnecore's on my car 88 Carrera) per recommendation of Steve Wiener at Rennsport in Portland Oregon. He had good comments on many threads about these wires. I had a low RPM and idle miss and these wires took it all away. Best wires I've seen in 35 years of driving Porsches.

I've seen the oem sets for sale as low as $280 at places like Vertex Automotive. Get a copy of Excellence and troll the ads.
