I have Hawk blues on my 79SC. Whenever I go to stop it makes so much noise that little old ladies are looking for the garbage truck. If I want it silent I drive the my 78 911SC.

Hey guess what?

It looks like the same company that owns Mintex, also owns Bendix, as well as Centric and PBR and Axxis.

So technically, I have Mintex brakes. How 'bout that?

Hmmm I checked Porterfield's website and they show rear pads for for the S caliper, but nothin for the front. Suppose I oughta call sometime.

Exclamation piston rotation

One thing to consider is if your caliper pistons are rotated properly. Some say it is not necessarily related to brake squeal, but it's hard to understand how it could not be. If your calipers are original and never rebuilt, it may not be an issue. You may need to remove the pads and eyeball them to make sure. Please read my past post on it (with photos) if you want to have all the bases covered on the issue.

FWIW, the rubber anti-squeal pads (Weltmeister?) only work for a short period of time. After about a month the noise was back. I was skeptical whether the thin rubber would hold up, and apparently it doesn't.

For street use, I really like the Hawk HPS pads. Affordable, and very good stopping behaviour, and low dust. But not great for the track. Used them at the track for a while, but found their limits. I've been using PF-97's lately for track duty. But want to try some of the new Hawk track pads (DTC60/70). The PF-97's are very noisy on street driving.

Default From "101 Projects for Your Porsche 911"

On page 141, Diagram 3 description: "The pistons are designed to reduce brake squeal when installed at this orientation."

You can replace brake pads all you want but your brakes will squeal unless you are assured that your pistons are oriented properly.

I had squeal with aggressive pads when I still had stock brakes, and had the piston rotated properly.

4 piston calipers achieve this with piston sizing, and still can squeal.

The point? Piston orientation can cause or contribute, but it isn't the for-sure answer to the issue.

Agreed, Ed, thanks. However, it hadn't been mentioned and if it hadn't been checked then that was an oversight.

FWIW,...Caliper piston orientation is for reducing taper wear on the pads. It has nothing to do with anti-squeal measures.

Brake squealing is due to high frequency vibration by the pads and is generally caused by many things including pad compound choice, rotor surface finish, and brake dust residue in the calipers that affect how the pads retract.

Once again, thanks, Steve, I stand corrected.
