Default Back up light question

Back up lights don't work on my 1968 911. I thought it was the switch, so I shucked out $70 for a new switch, installed it, and the lights still don't work. All the other lights across the rear work perfectly. When I touch the two wires together, the backup lights illuminate. With the switch removed, I can put my finger into the hole and when my wife puts the car from neutral to reverse, I can feel the pin move outward slightly (called "cam follower" in the Porsche parts katalogue, I think). I tried to pull this pin out to have a look at it, but it doesn't seem to want to come out. Looking into the hole with my mirror, the pin looks ok what little of it I can see, but there was some heavy black grease around it, which I cleaned off with a q-tip. Should I try to take this pin out? If so, how? Seems like my problem must have something to do with this pin or its movement. Would someone explain to me how the reverse gear is supposed to activate this switch through the pin?
Thanks very much for any help.
Rich
