Occasional smoke and noisy tappets

An oil extractor is a good way to siphon out the excess oil from the oil tank.
I have a friend with an 84 that his local mechanic has been suggesting he needs a rebuild soon for valve guides. That was about 25,000 miles ago and his Carrera is only consuming one quart every 1,500 miles.
I would just re-adjust the noisy valve(s) and keep an eye on the oil consumption.
Any pictures of the ride?

Hi John
An oil extractor sounds like the way to go.
I've attached some pics of my pride and joy. The last one is courtesy of a local speed camera (paid a fortune for that pic)

You can take excess oil out of the tank using a turkey baster and a piece of rubber or plastic tubing. Just be sure the tubing is long enough to stick out of the tank. You don't want to lose it in the tank. Sounds to be about a quart. A valve adjustment will quiet the noisy rocker arm.

Just loosen the sump bolt (bolt under the center of the engine) you can control oil flow better with that bolt.
Loosen, then turn with your fingers until oil starts to come out, let an appropriate amount pour out slowly. Tighten bolt back up. Warm it up to operating temp (180 on the gauge), check dipstick level. Repeat if necessary.
Be careful not to drain oil when hot, you'll want to let it cool down first.
