Toby, so far, no luck. What is wrong with your bushing? I haven't done a ton of 930 boxes, but I've never seen one with wear on that part.

Other than that, the same general rules apply to the 930 as to the 915. That said, you should work with the factory manual, those darn tools...

When you know what you need I have a few 930 parts in stock, so if you run into another road block let me know.

Pete,

Can't say that 2nd gear bushing is bad as I haven't torn the transmission down - YET.

I'm just so darned **** that I'd go in and replace parts when I'm in there just because I'm in there!

Porsche has made a fortune on me while I'm building this 2.4S MFI motor. I'm so **** that I'm replacing ALL of the hardware - whether it needs to be or not. But it will be ONE PRETTY SMOKIN' MOTOR when I'm done!

Good news, Toby. I found a perfect (used) bushing if in fact you need one. This is one of those 99% deals, so I would need measurements of your bushing to make sure it's correct.

Until you have it apart...and I know what you mean about "while you're in there!"

Soooo, resurrecting this thread and deviating SLIGHTLY over to a 930/34 transmission.....

Pete, should I consider replacing the Guide Sleeve in addition to the 1/2 Slider? Or is a Guide Sleeve one of those rotable parts that can be inspected and reused if it's in good shape? Reason for asking is that PAG has them, but JEEPERS are they expensive! Based on what I've estimated so far, that Guide Sleeve (930 302 401 00) is the single, most expensive part on the rebuild list! AND, I have to wait for Hans and Franz to come back from Christmas break to get one shipped.

I'm just curious as to what you would declare as "must-replace" parts while into a 1/2 cluster rebuild (assuming the gear sets are OK) and what is "OK to re-use".

I recognize that the 915 is your "baby", but the 930/34 *is* a close cousin! Would appreciate any counsel you might wish to offer.

Thanks my friend, and Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to you and your family!!

It was/is a paint to sample, so I don't know the exact color. It is close to a Ruby Red from the 356 era.

Ed:

Your car looks beautiful from your avatar.

I had a friend who owned an 81 wine red metalic new and it looked similar.

I am going to sell my 87 BMW 635 next year and am thinking about trying to locate that car.

Thanks

Pete, any suggestions/thoughts on my question about 930/34 rotable parts?

Toby: The "guide sleeve" aka slider guide, aka sliding shift sleeve guide, can have two things happen to it. (1) Its teeth are chipped/broken during an extreme synchro failure, or (2) In cases where very high mileage is present its teeth will develop a wear pattern along their outside edges, where the metal actually wears away a small amount. In either case the guide should be replaced.

I would never buy a guide sleeve in advance of opening up a transmission, I would say that part is re-usable about 98% of the time. You do want to plan on a gasket kit, collared nuts for the P/S and M/S (if you're planning to disassemble the M/S also), and I remember something about a reverse selector - but I'll have to do some research on that for you.

I must say Peter, you've done a phenominal job of detailing this. If you hadn't put the fear of God in me with regard to DIY trans rebuilds, I'd be tempted to give it a go sometime in the future when Ruby needs some help in this department.
