Default '85 911 Torsion Bars

I am trying to find some for my '85 911 that I am building into a DE car. Any help in finding some used ones would be great. Thanks! - Jay

No leads but you might try Pelican too. If you are building a DE car, I'd suggest 30mm rears vs. 28.

TroyN,
Everyone else is now suggesting 30mm rear as well. I have increased the search to 30mm rear. Thanks for the tip!

I suggest you get new Tbars, especially for a track car.

although a rare incident, I had one of my stock rear Tbars break a few years ago. became the insipriation to upgrade all my Tbars.

85 used Tbars will be almost 30 yrs old.

good luck

of course since you are looking for used upgraded bars, you may find a set that is not very old.

If it's a coupe I'd go bigger in the rear than even 30.

Spring steel starts to go south after ten years +/-. You can find some pretty good prices over at Perfomance Porsche. I just put new ones in my 356.
I would never use old Torsion Bars when new is reasonable in price.

I installed 27's in the back.......perfect as I like it firm but not over the top.

What would you suggest? A lot of people are suggesting 23/31.

This car will be used in everyway, so it looks like 23/31 it is. Thank you to everyone!

22mm 29mm would be my pick with matched bilstein dampers and all new bushings. Do it right the first time.

Oh yeah, I will be building up the whole suspension system. The guy building up the car (he has built MANY 911 race cars) really wants me to go with 23/28. Thanks!

Hi Jay,

No shortage of opinions here. And IMHO, if you are streeting the car, too, 23mm up front is pretty dang firm, eh, hard! Great for a dedicated trackrat, but I wouldn't want to drive streets on it, unless it were truly very seldom!

Balance is important, too. If going with 23 fronts, I'd definitely go with 31mm rear, otherwise you'll get understeer that you'll likely want to dial out. Frankly, I have no idea what that "guy" that you mention is thinking, because the "balance" he suggests really puzzles me! I've run 22/28 and that had understeer I didn't care for ...23/28 would plough like crazy unless maybe he's thinking of adding other wares??

If you go with 22mm front, I'd go 30 or 31mm rear, personally. FWIW, I have 22/31 with Bilstein Sports (not custom valved, but someday maybe) and love it! Wonderfully neutral with either under/oversteer capable on driver input. It took me some trial/error to arrive at the recipe, and I really like it (95% track use). This is with 22mm/21mm stock sway bars, btw. Adjustable sways add another dynamic that I will leave to others to address.

Another consideration is "effective" diameter as hollow (vs. solid) rear bars will have a larger physical diameter, but will have a stated "effective" diameter.

Edward

Edward,
Thank you for that great advice. When I sit down with my guy I will certainly address all of this advice. I will probably print out all of these posts to bring to the table when we start the build. This car will be probably 60/40 street/track use, so I want to make sure I don't loose any fillings on the street. But again, I will certainly take all of this into consideration.

Hi Jay,

Just another thing since you mentioned 60/40 use. I drive my Trackmeister maybe 5% or so on the street, which is to say rarely vs track use. If you are planning on streeting your car as often as you say here, then I'd seriously think about using 22 fronts and balancing the rear accordingly. Just my opinion, mind you, but my 22/31 (with Bil Sports) is plenty stiff on even smooth roads, and darned near jarring on road lips and irregularities; God forbid a pothole. Heck, I should have gone to 23 fronts since I am mine is 95% track weighted ...but I don't want to spend more money
Anyway, just some food for thought.

Edward
