Both.

All the new Porsches have a micro-switch that requires full clutch engagement to start the car.

That's a US standard for every car that has been in place for some time now.

probably all because of Audi .... those with long memories should remember the " killer" cars from the 80's..

I think they had something to do with that. But remember, those were automatics. They are why we step on the brake to be able to take an automatic out of park.

The Audi issue was an ergonomics problem. People swore they stepped on the brakes and the car accelerated. What they found was that the transmission was wide and the accelerator and brake were shifted to the left more than your average car. When individuals had to brake, they really had to move their foot far left....occasionally they missed the spot and stepped on the accelerator instead.

Both. Put it into either 1st or reverse (lowest gear), let it roll against the gear if on an incline, then set the emergency tight.

I don't believe it will hurt your transmission if "bumped" while set like this. I had someone bump against my car in a lot, front to front (no blocks). This "driver" then "hit the brake, but it was the gas" and pushed my car 15 feet back out of it's slot. No damage to the transmission but plenty to bumper, etc.

I believe leaving the car in gear and using the parking brake is actually the law in most states.

Sounds like a infantile question...but I'll bet there is more than one answere.

I see we've strayed into another area, Unintended Acceleration, one I'm pretty schooled in. The NHTSA and the Japanese equivalent both found that it was the wide set pedals AND the placement of a parcel shelf beneath the dash on the driver's side (I had an '87 5000 S: this shelf was convenient for wallet, envelopes going to the P.O., etc; however, it did cut off part of the view of the pedals.) that led to people hitting the gas while trying for the brake.

A test was run with the emergency brake set tight. The car did not move, despite putting it into gear and flooring the gas. People claimed "It was more powerful than ever. I had the brake on, but it just jumped up and ran through the rear wall of the brick and block garage all on its own." After that, all sorts of cars suddenly had sudden acceleration. The Shift Lock fixed the problem.

At the time my wife had wanted and got a Suzuki Samurai. I used to joke that I had "one that leaps and one that rolls over."

i e barake and leave it in gear. I see lots of you shift it oposite of the way the hill goes. Im no expert on this but im pretty darn sure your not suposed to turn these engines backwards. Messes up the chain tentioners i believe. You might want to be mindfull of that
