Post Pros & Cons of trailering

I'm considering getting an open trailer so I can take my weekend driver 911 to DE events, on vacation to N. England, etc. probably use it (5-7 times /year) and I'd like to hear any comments good/bad re: same. BTW- I'll be towing w/ an Expedition (hitch needs to be added) and although I consider myself an OK driver I've no trailering experience. Is the expense and trouble worth it for this little use/year? Also- any experience/comments re: tag-along dollys instead of a full trailer? I've also considered renting a trailer or dolly as needed as an option? TIA for any suggestions or help.

I'd highly recommend it, Realtime. Trailer a 911 is easy and your Expedition will have NO problem towing the 911, even with a relatively heavy trailer. My 6-cylinder 4-Runner tows my 911 on a 2000lb. U-Haul trailer though the Sierra's with no problems at all. I found it easy to drive with and back up with the trailer, too.

I'd stay away from those tow-dolly things like the plaugue. I have no experience with them, but they just LOOK like trouble

I've also found trailering the car makes it super easy to bring along tools, spare wheels, etc. with the bonus that you and your S.O. get to ride in the same vehicle.

My advice would be to rent a trailer first and see if you "like" towing the car before plunging in and buying a trailer. You'd have to make the investment in the trailer hitch, but it might be a good first step. U-Haul rents trailers for about $50 a day.

Have fun,

Dean

You won't even know its there. Brought home my 914 with a U-haul car trailer ( weighs about a zillion pounds ) with my Expedition.

I'm in the same boat. Thinking about going to Boise and Seattle for auto-cross and track events.

Just to give more to think about. An open trailer would great for one day events, there and back in a day. But if your going to be staying at motels at night. I think I'd sleep better with my "pride and joy" locked in a box.

My .02c. for tonight. <img src="graemlins/sleep.gif" border="0" alt="[sleep]" />
