Question head stud replacement

I just read in a post that it may be possible to replace lower head studs without pulling the engine. Is this possible? I am not asking if this is a good idea or not, I can't imagine that it is. I have just been pondering all sorts of problems that one would encounter trying to perform the job with out removing P&Cs.

If there is a theoretical yes I would be interested in hearing that as well.

I think yes as long as there is enough of the stud still sticking out of the case & you can get to it. For instance the middle 4 Cs. You can remove the exhaust & oil return tubes, weld a cheep socket to the end & turn it out w/a flex drive. A broken stud shouldn’t offer much resistance. Might make for an interesting Saturday, you buying the beer? I guess you don’t remember talking about this last year at the track? Where was the other post?

Cool

David, Was it the beer? I certainly have the space to do the work. I'll send you the url, the subject has nothing to do with head studs.

In the meantime I probably could crawl under there and see if the middle lower studs are visible. I'll be out at Summit both days of the HPDC.

The cooling tin is in the way but that can be removed if you can get to the top of it under the shroud.
I think it's a bad idea but it might be an interesting exercise.

As soon as I hit the go button I had another thought. You can get hollow studs with welding wire down the middle. I have a MIG welder, just not very good yet. Why not look for one of these or just use a mild steel rod & try to weld the 2 pieces together from below. There should be nothing holding the old stud in but nostalgia!
