Post Early 911-series owners... how'd you register you vehicle?

Thinking about getting an early series 911. When the time comes, contemplating registering it with "antique vehicle" plates to side-step emission testing. Illinois is a dyno-emissions testing state, last time I was there they overheated my engine. I realize there are limitations to having AV tags -- limited number of miles, can only drive to/from shows -- but are they REALLY policing this?

I registered my '71 as "historic" here in Md, but it is so rarely operational that I haven't exceeded the parameters of the collectors tags.

On the other hand, my wife's '67 mustang is registered as a daily driver. We didn't want to try the historic plates w/ that since she drives it to school every day and the lot where she parks is heavily patrolled by cops (who notice things like expired tags, missing parking permits, etc). Because of the age of that car she didn't have to run it through smog testing, but it was something of a hassle fixing all the little things for the safety inspection.

Check your smog laws to see if pre-74 cars are exempt. They are in California.

Here in Ohio I've got "historical" tags or is it "hysterical" LOL. I'm supposedly allowed 180 days per year of driving, but I drive it 9.5 months out of the year with no trouble. Check about your smog laws like Jack suggested in Ohio anything 25 years or older doesn't need testing.

I have historical tags on my car... the only requirement from the NY DMV was an insurance card that had "historical" on it....... there are no limitations to how many miles you may drive etc..... the car has to be at least 25 yrs old to qualify.........

what your insurance carrier requires is another story
