@ Vracer, I would always recommend using a GROUNDED spare spark plug connected to one of the cylinder spark plug wires when checking for spark to ensure proper resistance/impedance is maintained during the test. Use a wire that has clips on both ends to ground the spare plug threads to the engine ground point.
