Default Who insures your 911?

As some of you may know from some of my previous posts that I am looking for a 87 to 89 coupe. Could some of you owners let me know who insures your cars? Also, do you just go with a face value like say $20k, and insure it for that much? Ballpark cost for a year?

Mahalo,
Rob

I insure my house through Traveler's. When it was time to change car insurance, I went with Traveler's. Our '82 SC is insured for $17K actual value, as a pleasure car that can be driven 5K miles/year, without overnight restrictions. It costs me approximately $700/year as a third car. The only requirement was that I had to provide a professional appraisal, which was not a problem.

I'm with progressive on my 930 as it's a euro and USAA wouldn't underwrite it. It's insured for $35k agreed to value and my prmium is approximately $800/year.

I had the worst time finding someone who could cover my gray market car.

Eventually went Progressive.

I have liability, 22 years old with 1 DWI it costs me almost 200 a month.

I use American Collectors (800 360 2277), my 86 911 car is valued at $17k and I pay $261/year with a 5k mile annual limit. Covers liability and collision, includes a towing package. $500 deductible comp and collision.

A lot of people I know use Hagerty's, their quote for me was almost double American Collectors. I have a clean driving record.

AC requires car to be kept in a locked garage, which it is, but I didn't have to provide proof of that. You also have to have proof that it is not your daily driver (you have to have a first car). I took their silver towing plan: covers $100 in towing, $50 roadside assistance, $50 emergency lockout.

87 911 with USAA $385/6 mos. This insurance is only avaialble to servicemen/women of the Armed Forces and their relatives. I really need to go with someone else for the Porsche. They do have a collector's division and I believe is slightly lower...maybe by $40/6 mos.

Hagerty quoted me $521/year, valued at $19K, $0 deductible, 10 miles towing included. Car had to be parked under covered garage, driven less than 5K miles/year. The problem is the yearly mileage. Since Feb of this year I have put about 3K miles.

I guess I should check American Collectors.

That's my problem with the collector insurances, they limit your mileage so badly. Otherwise they seem to be a good value fo the money. I like to drive mine too much to get limited like that. I've owned it about 3 or 3-1/2 years now and I've put 20K miles on it. When I flew in the Air Force USAA had no issue covering my cars and boat. Then they found out I raced cars after I left the service and that was it. They dropped me like a hot potato. Never had a claim either, Oh well.

great thread. I'm looking for an 88-89 Targa and was about to call USAA who carries my house and other cars. I'll report back what they tell me. I'm also going to call Hagerty and AC and will report the results from them as well.

BTW, I also have a 17 year-old driver in the house, so my rates went up when she got her DL. Prior to adding her to the policy the Porsche was $287/6 mos. Not too bad.

I tried to isolate the 911 from her in the policy as she is not allowed to drive the car nor she knows how to drive manual...but that doesn't matter to USAA.

Thanks for the replys. What about Grundy? Any of you use them? I thought some of you would have as I've heard about them before. Good to know there are others too.

Peter Z. I just got through reading your book. Very informative. From your info, I've made the decision to get a 87 to 89 model.

I have Grundy - this is my first year - I paid $282 - no mileage limit.
I can't race it or have anyone under 25 drive it, and I can't take it out for 'errands', and they want it garaged if I remember - no prob.

I usually dealt with USAA for everything else, and I think they steered me to American Collector for the Porsche (via some arrangement). I wound up going with Grundy partly because we're in the same neighborhood.

As an Insurance Agent, I have my personal autos with Allied Insurance along with my home.

On my classic cars (25 years old or older) I use Hagerty Insurance. They specialize in Classic Car Insurance. Very cost effective, great coverage, great to deal with and they have been in the classic car business quite a while.

I insured clients with Millions of dollars of value with no problems.

Best this about the Classic Car insurers is that they will insure your classics with and "Agreed Value". That means that if your vehicle is totaled or stolen they would pay the amount that was agreed upon.

On the issue of racing. If you are on a track or an organized speed contest. Even just a timed autocross course. Be very carefull because your Insurance policy contains an exclusion.

Your company will try to deny any claims relating to that type of activity. Including time in the pits.

Thanks, Rob! I've been looking forward to our next trip to Maui since the last time (too long ago)!

I should mention that I was with Leland West, but they and Haggerty both have restrictions that prevent my wife from driving the car to work once in a while. I have a clean record and no teens in the house, and the Traveler's package surprised us with how competitive they are.
