Ed - that was a funny comment no offense RL

In RL's defense the OP's description was a little confusing.

Having experienced this very situation, I knew what he was saying. It's like discussions with my wife, largely incoherent to the casual observer but we understand what each other is saying

Doh! I'm in the middle of this problem. The Bosch 0227300004 CDI unit provides the trigger for the tachometer, so a "0" reading is very possible. I just went through the mini-diagnostic procedure and found +12 on pin 15 (red wire) of the CDI connector with the ignition switched on. The distributor sender is putting about 1.3 VAC into the connector positions 31d and 7. I then put the digital meter (AC voltage - 500VAC scale) on to the coil terminals and.....zippo! So it's either find another CDI box, switch over to an MSD unit and coil (and if it is like my '71 911 - tachometer hassle) or tear into this one and find the component that had the "smoke" escape from it. The MSD worked without a hitch (other than the tach) on the '77.
