"I read in the 101 Projects book about the MSD and thought I would give it a try."
There's a lot of mis-info in that book and too bad many Porsche owners
rely too much on it or take it for the "gospel".
"I have not cut any wires and can always go back to the stock unit if it does not work. But then if I can't pass emissions I won't be able to drive it."
If the only emission failure relates to HC, then focus on the possible bad
cylinder or cylinders. The most common HC problems are:
1. leaky injectors
2. weak cylinder/cylinders
3. bad spark plug wires or connectors
4. slightly rich mixture
5. retarded timing (or poor advance control)

I have not read through all the post but I will say this; I have never hooked up an MSD box and it worked the first go-around.
I have put, I think, 4 of them on my cars and others and the damn things never seem to be hooked right.
I think the instructions are always wrong. It takes a lot of patience to figure out what is hooked wrong.

nobody else thinks it's strange that the car ran perfect (except for idle HC's) before wiring was tampered with and now all of a sudden the starter is bad, the fuel filter is clogged, the plug wires are crossed, the fuel pump is bad and it runs like crap....... quit fixing unbroken stuff and put it back the way it was... then move forward with your problem, high HC's at idle

Okay the MSD is out and I pick my car up tomorrow.
Sending it back. I couldn't get it to work and two shops could not get it to work.
Car should run find. I will take the advice and just work on getting it to pass emissions.
Thanks.
Rob

hey, after reading my reply i notice it came off harsh. that was not my intention, I just hate to see people get off track chasing their tail. Always back up one step if things go wrong as you will usually find your problem there. Good luck with the car and I agree with lorenfb's check list
