Also, Everything I have read makes me think that 911 SC and later do not need the tach adaptor. I am running mine (964 gauges) directly off the tach output with no problems so far (knock on wood).

Update
This evening I removed the tach adapter.
I connected the pig tail from the side of the MSD box to the shielded and core wire from the distributor. Red Wire from MSD to Starter, Black to ground.
Orange & Black - to coil.
Small red to red in the wiring from old CD.
Ground is going to the engine just below the distributor. (is that good)
So I cranked it several time and finally I decided that maybe my spark plug wires were wrong. So I used the Berkley book and moved all of my wires.
Firing order 1-6-2-4-3-5
On my distributor cap I have 1 just right of the front clip. On around in firing order.
SO thin I cranked it again. Nothing and then POP as in backfire and a puff of smoke.
So I am getting close. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Rob
Have to run some errands back in 2 hours. Then I will reverse the wires on the pigtail (maybe that is it) What do you think.

HOLD it stop right there ....
if you mean the Bently Book then you may have an error. That same error cost me an airbox.
Read my sig. When calculating the firing order keep in mind the rotor goes counterclockwise. Many Bentlies have a tyo with respect to this. start at the little line on the distrubtor I think it is around 3 or 4 o clock looking from the top. This is cyliner one, then count the other cylinders going CCW>

....I remember Iceman's thread about airboxes. Hopefully you have a pop off valve, or it didn't backfire too hard. My old SC did not have a pop off valve, and I survived a couple small backfires. Sounds like you are starting to be on the right track. Keep us posted. Fingers crossed for your airbox.

Thank you thank you, thank you.
Now I do remember reading somewhere that the bentley book was off.
I do have a pop off valve and it was as mild pop.
I will go out now and reverse the order of my wires. Back in a few.

also if you do have a pop off valve make sure it is seated and sealed properly. especially after a "POP"
if they don't seal completely they can cause a no start condition as the mixture will be off.

Okay, I corrected the spark plug wires to counter clockwise. Still no fire.
Reversed the MSD pigtail to distributor and whammo starts right up.
Great news. Drove about 10 miles warmed up but running very rough.
Could I have two spark plug wires crossed?
Also, I have no tack so Thursday I will install the Tach adapter now that I know where everything goes. I will also shorten all the MSD wires and shrink wrap them. Clean everything up.
So now the rough running. Pretty good at idle a bit faster than before but not really rough.
Under power I am getting some missing.
Thoughts?
Thanks you guys I can't tell you how much I appreciate this.

Well go back to basics and recheck your wires starting at cylinder one and working around. take your time and make sure everything is firmly seated and actually on a plug.
The other possibility is your MSD may be cutting out as it thinks it is in over rev condition . That info i belive comes from the tach. Not sure totally and I will let the MSD guys take over now that you at least have it started.
Good Job

Electrical Help
Looks like I am going to need the Tach Adapter to get the tach going on my MSD project.
The instructions for the Tach Adapter have a wire going to the White/Red wire coming from the Tach. The Bentley book shows this wire going to the RPM Limiter Switch.
Where would I locate either this wire or the RPM Limiter Switch.
The car is now running again, rough (I can deal with that) but I need my tach to work.
According to the 101 projects book sometimes you need the tach adapter and sometimes you don't. He says that MSD has not been able to tell him why or when.
Where is the White/Red wire located in the engine bay.
Thanks,
Rob

Tonight I have a few minutes before dark so I checked the air box and popoff valuve. Both good.
Checked each sparkplug wire at the plug and at the distributor. #6 was loose at the plug.
Everything looks good.
Started car. Starts right up. Before I installed the MSD it would start but then stall. After it warms up a bit it runs a little fast but I don't have tach at the moment so not positive.
When I drive is is good and then sometimes starts to cut out under power.
Seems weaker than it was on the low end. Not as much torque.
Any thoughts.

Tonight I installed the Tach Adapter, cleaned up all the wires. Made it look great.
Starts right up. Runs better now and the tach works.
But, when I hit 3200 rpm it lurches like a rev limiter. I called Summit Engineering where I bought it and asked if they ship with a 3000 rpm limiter. There should have been 3000, 6000, 7000 and 8000 rev limit modules included and I didn't get anything in the box. They are shipping the modules tomorrow. I think I may have gotten a returned unit.
Could it be fuel pressure or to lean that does the lurching?
Thanks,
Rob

From your description could be either. The rev limiter should kill ignition when you hit a certain RPM and then renegae when you drop below. The problem is not enough fuel may feel the same as the engine demands more in the higher rev area and it won't fire if there is no fuel.
Worst case you could rent some dyno time and throw it on and watch your fuel pressures. But your troubleshooting seams sound enough and get your ignition squared away first .
How did it all run before your MSD project ? that would be a big clue !!!
