As my mid life crisis continues, and I wish to purchase all the 911's I see, I seem to be continually drawn to one I've found on AutoTrade in Ohio. Unfortunately, I can't post the link. Briefly, it is an 88 Cab, red, 99k miles, asking 19900. I got some info from the seller this past weekend, and I pass it along to all of you to help decipher the data. The car is at an independent lot outside of Cincinatti. I had them mail over the CarFax, which raised a few questons: It was sold at auction 5/96, with 39k miles, and again 4/02 with 89k mi. I don't know if this is a good/bad/indifferent thing. It was also in an accident 6/00, right side impact, hit a guardrail, and was towed. I can't find anymore info regarding the accident or repairs done to the car. It has also had some serious repairs done by Air Cooled Classics, in Knoxville TN. 3/18/07- recharge AC; 5/18/07- Car stalling intermittantly, had leakdown/compression test, major service, rear brakes, crank position and ref sensors replaced, DME relay replaced, 5/24/07- top end overhaul, 12 valve guides replaced, piston rings replaced, #5 piston/cyl assembly replaced.
I have a weakness for finding frogs that can be turned into princes (or princesses in my case). Have I found that, or will this frog turn into a monster that will devour my bank account in short order? Any advice you could share would be appreciated. Thanks
The fact that someone had the engine torn that far down, and did not go for a full rebuild raises questions in my mind. What caused the piston to be replaced? Chain tensioner failure? It is not that much more work to change the main bearings and do a complete engine rebuild. If there were metal flakes in the oil, then they should have installed new coolers when they repaired the engine.
I think you have more info on that car already than many of us have gotten after years of ownership. I wouldn't count it out, but I would be very cautious. The side impact more than the engine work scares me.
Thanks for all your info. I don't have any special affinity for this car, other than it is a red 88 cab . I too am very concerned about the collision, especially since I looked at one that had had incorrect body work done, and was now a rusty mess. I was torn on the top end job. It seems as if these cars all need them evenually, and judging by the receipts from Air Cooled Classics, it is by no means an inexpensive undertaking. If someone had already done it, great for me. I am very concerned because, mile wise, it seems as if the top end was done, and then the car was only driven about 1k miles over the course of 18 months, and then was traded in. Perhaps more costly repairs remain. And, the car is about 10 hours away from me.
