Default chassis # in luggage compartment

Hello. Is it true that the chassis number, in the front luggage compartment for an '88 Carrera, is different from the serial/VIN number for the same car? I recently purchased an '88 Carrera Targa and that is what the dealer, who sold it to me, is telling me. The number in the luggage compartment is different and has a ZZZ world code. The numbers (in the luggage compartment and the serial number) match on my 1973.5 911T , but I'm being told it was different by '88. Many thanks for any help you can provide.

The 17-digit VIN came into being in 1981, I believe.
You have a gray market car and it sounds like your car was Federalized for the U-S.
If it's like mine, the U-S VIN, which you'll find on a plaque on the dash, will differ by one digit.

Yep. The trunk will say ZZZ, but your A-pillar plate and door post sticker will have the "real" number.

Pete, many thanks for your helpful reply. It is much appreciated! I guess this means I don't have to worry that I have a gray market car, since the "real' VIN in the other 2 places you mentioned is for a US model. It is wonderful to be able to get help from a person with your expertise! By the way I love your book and find its' information invaluable. Highly recommended!!!

Not so fast! Carrera "tubs" were generic, and all carried "ZZZ" in the trunk compartment. After the car was built to satisfy delivery to a particular country it then received its "A" pillar VIN plate and door post sticker.

In the case of a car built for the U.S., like the OP's car, the plate and sticker will match, and the 4/5/6 digits will give body, engine and restraint info. The VIN stamped into the trunk floor will still say "ZZZ."

Now, this is getting interesting, Pete.
My car came from the factory with a cat. It carries option COO, which as I understand it is Euro-spec emissions. It also has a 930-21 engine...the low-compression version for North America and Japan.
It has DOT and EPA papers from 1986, so it was imported after the fact...but can I really call this a gray market car? Now I'm confused...can I shoot you a PM with my VINs (both of them) so I can figure this out?

Sure! If you want, just "xxxx" the last four - they're just the consecutive build number for your specific car...

Remember, your car might have started life with the Option M 298 package!
