Default MA Emissions / Inspection Experience?

Has anyone had one done recently on an 84 - 89? Anyone with cats / smog removed? I can't find anything definitive but it looks like everything prior to 1996 without an OBD is exempt?

I was looking at a 74 this weekend that clearly is exempt but I'm not sold on a 2.7.

Any experiences?

I had my 88 done last year before I was allowed register it. It still has the cat and all the emissions equipment.
It passed with flying colors.
The guy said the numbers were amazingly low for a 20 year old car.
It makes me wonder how it would do with the cat removed.

How did they test it? Sensor in the tailpipe or OBD?

'85 (non OBD-II) and older no longer require emissions test as far as I know. They have phased out the dynos and only do a plug-in test now. If you post your location I'm sure somebody can recommend a classic-friendly station.

Todd, I just did mine in RI, 25 years you get an automatic pass. According to guys I know in MA (work there), it must HAVE the equipment on there (or look like it does) but actual readings are not done.

FWIW, my 84 passed (supposedly) the sniffer even though it didn't have to in RI... I have a Fabspeed Premuffler instead of the cat. I asked the shop owner who I know casually & he told me not to bother putting the cat back on for him.

I can give you my readings if you'd like.

Interesting stuff. I think I'm going to shoot for a 78-80 with a 3.0 and add SSI and SW chip and maybe cams if that adds any value. I understand the intake / exhaust sizes are bigger than the 3.2 so it likes the SSI quite a bit? Compares favorably with the 3.2? On a rebuild I'll just see what is out there for a transplant or take it out to 3.2. I don't want anything too crazy, I've had way too many unreliable cars (I owned a 68 Corvette, say no more....)
