The following was found on the drain plug of an 87 G50 transmission which was recently rebuilt. Prior to this discovery the car was driven with zero problems and the fluid was being changed as part of routine maintenance. There was also the normal amount of very fine shavings on the magnet. The nut has a few nicks on it but appears to have come loose, hit a couple of things on the way down, ended up on the magnet, and stayed there. Obviously the washer took quite a ride. Should/can the car continue to be driven? Any idea what these parts are from?

Just my opinion.... It's a relatively fresh box with lots of parts inside which are presumed to be in excellent condition. I would tear it down, and make sure you put the nut back where it came from, and verify that no bearings or gears were damaged. If the unit was old, and coming up on an overhaul anyway I would keep the hammer down until it started making noises. Based on your assesment of the condition of the gearbox I would want to have a look-see, and possibly a word with the builder.

Those parts are from the clamping plate that attaches to the diff housing - the unit with the shift locks. There are two possibilities here:
1. The "rebuilder" did a horribly sloppy job and left an extra nut/washer (during dis-assembly) inside the trans and never bothered to clean the drain plug.
2. He did a nice job, but got a text message that he answered instead of tightening the nuts properly. The hair on the drain plug indicates a higher probability for it to be #1.
Take it apart...
