Exclamation 915 gearbox service

I was told $1200 to inspect, and repair the 1st and 2nd gear synchros.

Is this reasonable?!

Please keep in mind the trans has already been dropped.

Nope. From what I'm told it's hard to tell what needs to be serviced without specifically driving it. I had some trouble getting it into 1st and 2nd gear when it was in the car. Sometimes grinding when getting into those gears. The flywheel is being serviced and the clutch is replaced.

I'm rebuilding the motor and it would be a shame to put a gearbox that needs work back in the car just to take it out again!

If you can get out for 1200 I think that's fair. But chances are there will be other issues when it's opened up.

$1200 sounds about right to me. I had the exact same work on my 915 done a couple years ago for about that price.

It cost HOW MUCH?!?

Great info Pete, much appreciated. Regardless of price, i would have a hard time sleeping knowing I didn't service the gearbox.... Looks like that trip to Europe can wait. Now if only someone could assure me the benefit outweighs the cost...

Unfortunately, the 915 transmission holds many secrets, and there are far more ways to make one wrong, as opposed to right. The result can be one that you will love, or hate, for roughly the same cost. Everything about a successful 915 repair comes down to how good your technician is. Ask him how he will handle a loose pinion bearing - that should give you an idea about him. Here is one more link, different than the above:

If you can pull out the motor and transmission yourself, you can save yourself alot of money; easily 2k in labor cost.

I dropped my 915 off at Schatz and Krum in Sacramento. I have been calling every day for the past week to receive my 'diagnosis' yet no call back.

It's been 3 weeks. I will be taking it elsewhere. Who would have thought the transaxle would be holding my project from completion!!!

nikkoa, my mechanic here in Fresno has rebuilt many 915s as well as 911 motors. I won't say they're cheap to rebuild but he is probably cheaper than any place else that you will find.

week 4; went by Schatz and Krum today to pick my 915 up and take it else where. They offered my transmission 'back in pieces' then proceeded to deliver a hand written note with parts and prices on it, yet no total. When i asked why my phone calls hadn't been returned with a quote he said 'i had nothing to tell you'. I called another local shop to ask if he would service the 915 in pieces. He told me to ask for the owner of Schatz and tell him to get the job done (knew him personally i assume). The guy at the front desk informed me the owner wasn't in (naturally). I asked for some officially documents then lift abruptly. WHAT TO DO!?!?

I am calling today to talk to the owner but this is far from acceptable business practice. Now i'm forced to work with these clowns when they dont deserve a cent from me!!!!

I respectfully urge you to get the transmission out of that shop ASAP. Please pm me for an idea...
