Default OT: question about timming belt and water pump.

Hi guys. Since this is an OT board, I guess it's ok for me to ask question about my Lexus. It's a 2000 ES300, has 110k miles now. Someone told me that it has timming belt and must be replaced at 100k. If not, I am taking a very big risk. And when replace the belt, I need to replace water pump and something else, (the package) cost around $700 bucks. Are these all true? Or what is the least I can do?
Thanks.

Ron, tell your wife she has to come up with $1,400.00 or the car is toast. When you get it done for half that you are going to look like the stud you are.

That actually sounds like a reasonable estimate.

RNLN, all that sounds right. Now a days the water pump uses the timing belt to function. If you replace only the timing belt and shortly after the water pump freezes up it'll snap the belt and then all your valves are gonna slam into the pistons causing complete engine failure.

yup it's all true , the belt, water pump and T stat should all be changed, I changed my idler pulleys and tensioner at the same time. If the belt snaps, throw the car away , it will be cheaper.

That sounds like a good price for the belt replacement and water pump.

Same job wll need to be performed on my VW Jetta around 65,000 miles, manual says 105,000 miles but many have failed around 70k due to worn tensioner rollers and the age of the belt.

P & L (6 hours): cheapest I found is about $750 with the indy, $1,000 at the stealership. I have a few years to save up...

The guy up the street was always giving me and my boxster budy a hard time .. calling his a Miata and wondering why I couldn't a ford a real car likr his Chrysler 300 hemi ( you know the type ) . Anyway he finally rolls up in a 99 Audi TT ( i think you know where this is going ) Says how do you like my sports car , I am one of the boys now , we should go crusing .. me and my buddy kinda roll our eeys and smile politely. I pass him on the highway coulpe weeks ago. It was kinda easy to do since his " new " car was on a flat bed.
I didn't even have to ask . His wife told my wife that he snapped the timing belt . She is so pissed at him becasue this is his D.D. and doesn't have another car , and he can't aford to get it fixed .... OUCH !!! somewhere in the neighbourood of 10G CAD is what I heard at the stealership.

Ouch $$ that is an expensive lesson !!

Might be cheaper for him to locate a used motor and have a local Indy perform the swap..

yup but he is not the brightest bulb in the box if you know what i mean . he asked me if I would fix it for him for cheap and he needs it back like day after tomorrow. Too freakin funny. I first met this guy when he knocked on my door and said he had heard from some of the neighbours I had a torque wrench and would i mind coming by to torque up his wheels because he heard I don't lend out my Torque wrench ..... I think i better just leave him for the dealer to have to deal with . If I suggested an indy that I know the indy would come back and punch me. This guys a tool .... but to get back on topic , yes it was an expensive lesson. he just gpt the car towed to the dealer and they tore it down and gave him the quote , of course including what they have charged him just to tear it down and look at it.

You don't know the water pump? geez. water pump is the electrical device which automatically pump water into the AC condensor and radiator areas when it gets too hot in summer

Dough,
She thought cars is my job around here. And if you tell her I need $700 bucks to mess with her perfect running car (better than my 911), she'll think you are taking me to the hooker house

guys,
do I need to replace the tensioners, or just the tensioner's bearing is fine? Same question for idler too. The reason I ask because I found some kit with the bearings only, no tensioners.
Thanks.
