Post 911SC Alternator

My '78 SC has worn alternator bearings. They are not yet so bad that the fan rubs on the housing but they are noisy. My question is:- can the unit be dismantled and the bearings replaced? ?I do have acces to a certain amount of workshop equipment so I am able to press out bearings etc.

Any advicew would be greatly appreciated!

Remove the altnernator and take it to a local alternator rebuilder. You could probably do it yourself, but rebuilders generally don't charge much to raplace bearings.

I'll second that idea.

...just make sure they're familiar with a 911 alternator, they are "one of a kind".

Out local alternator/starter rebuild facility does a pretty good job on them, but tell them to use ORIGINAL PARTS!! The failure rate is fairly high when they use aftermarket parts from Japan/China...nothing against these parts/manufacturers except that I have witnessed a VERY high failure rate through our local P-Car facility. <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />

I agree with Jeff. Since the cost is so high on these and the remanufactured parts are not of great quality then a local rebuilder should replace the bearings but, use factory or OE bearings. They need to have previous experience or understand this unit first though.
