Question air cooled

I know of only four air(oil) cooled automobiles - VW Beetle, 356, Corvair, 911. Are air cooled cars ever front engined? If not, why not? Isn't there any air up front?

Off on a tangent, would anyone be upset with a V8 conversion for a Corvair?

Wasn't the original Morgan three wheeler, with front wheel drive, air cooled?

And of course, over time, many of Porsches racing machines have been air cooled.

I know of one other, the American made Franklin. They were produced from 1902-1934 and all were air cooled front engine. Actually, they even made a twelve cylinder model.

Bill, the Morgan 3 wheelers were indeed air cooled, running a V Twin style motorcycle engines in front. However, I'm pretty sure (I'll have to confirm in some reference sources) they were rear drive, w/ "reverse tricycle" layout having a single (driven) rear wheel. Part of a long standing theme of 3 wheelers from GB to avoid the taxes on autos, since they were legally considered motorcycles.

Never forget that Czechoslovakian Tatra with its air-cooled V-8 in the rear.

Some others (use www.google.com to get info cause Explorer just crashed and I lost the links I put in here):
  • Tatra, from Czechoslovakia (sp?) - rear engine, decent power (oops, I got beaten to the punch on that one)
  • BMW Isetta etc - rear engine
  • Fiat Bambina might have been air cooled (rear engine). Fiat 600 and 850 were watercooled but rear engine I think
  • AND.... Citroen GS - I am pretty sure this is front engine and air cooled.
  • Trabant - from East Germany -might be front engine - worth checking. Definitely 2 stroke. http://users.netlink.com.au/~andrewl/mct/prod.htm

Oh, and, ahem, the Porsche 914 and VW Bus, Variant/type 4, Karmann Ghia etc etc

My deepest apologies for the multi-posting!

I will fix that.
