Default Radio replacement

Greetings,
This is my first post as I just joined the world of Pcar owners last week with an '88 911 CE. Bone stock in beautiful condition with 65k. John Walker in Seattle did the PPI and it came out thumbs up. I do need to replace the radio so I would appreciate any suggestions regarding quality, price, etc.
And, if it stops raining here in Seattle, I will get a decent foto and post it. That could take a while.

Welcome, and it sounds like you have a nice Porsche. I think you'd have to probably elaborate on your taste in music, price range, aethetic considerations, etc before an intelligent answer could be given. Otherwise you'll get a bunch of posts that tell you to listen to "engine music". Not that anything is wrong with that, but you are asking for recommendations.

For example, if you spend a lot of time listenting to music, and if you already have a system that delivers a certain level of performance, then you won't want to settle for something below what you are used to, etc. Price is also a major factor.

Thanks for the guidance, the current radio isn't working. I'm kind of an "engine music" guy, but when Mrs. Bear goes for a ride she likes to take some of her favorite discs. Lately it's the "Twilight" disc. Cripes!
But to the subject, an AM/FM with a single CD player and Bluetooth capable would suffice, nothing cheap but it doesn't have to be concert quality.

Seabear, welcome to rennlist.

You may want to try a couple things before you start spending big bucks on head units....You said the car is stock, no? That makes me guess it has a Blaupunkt Reno. Try cleaning the connections on the back of it. My Reno needs a good pot hole now and then to stay connected. I went forever thinking I was gonna have to switch it out and in the end it worked just fine. It just has poor terminals. The pin puller tool to remove it from the dash is available at automotion.com or most audio stores. Any install shop should be willing to pop it out for you.

Congrats!
Based on what you described, I like rusnak's suggestions. You benefit from bluetooth for your phone, and you get usb, to allow a thumbdrive to store your music. A $10, 2Gb thumbdrive carries an awful lot of music. 4x50 is enough for casual listening

I've had success w/Kenwood and Sony ($40-60 cheaper for same features compared to MP57, plus choice of sirius/SM), but you might as well put in a Blaupunkt! I'll consider one of these as well, when I find the new car.

Thanks, Guys, for the suggestions and the links. db, since Washington State is a "hands free" cell phone state I do need to upgrade the unit to a Bluetooth capable system so I will follow rusnak's links and look at the Blaupunkts.

Calif is also a handsfree state. I'm surprised they let us have a phone at all in the car. I bought the add-on Bluetooth kit, and it does not work with my Motorola phones. I'm told that the dedicated Bluetooth headunits work well with phones, but you might want to check the compatibility list and whatnot. I found that Crutchfield is not very knowledgeable about Blaupunkt.

Can you hear speaker phone in a 911?? Seems like it would be loud.

Even the speaker phone in my "quiet" 996 can be tough.

No respect I tell you, no respect. J/K

You aren't actually going to drive your 911 are you?

I forget about all the new gizmos when I'm in my 911. To me it's 1988 all over again. I'm 21 again, and cell phones don't exist. (nor do wife, childen, and bills)

speakerphone is a no can do. I have one of those ear things and that is sort of marginal due to engine noise. Since the hands free kit is a speakerphone of sorts, and has a mic that you glue to the dash or the window frame, I was skeptical of that too.

Thanks, Guys, maybe I just toss the cell phone in the drawer and enjoy the drive without the leash. I'll check out the Blaupunkts so The-Woman-That-Sits-In-The-Right Hand-Seat will be placated and we can have some pleasant time behind the wheel looking for some favorite roads.
