Default I need Tom! Jerry ate a wire and it shorted...Smoke!

This morning as I was taking my son to school, I found out that a mouse had made it's home in the luggage compartment of my '82 SC Targa. I found this out because after I turned on the rear defogger and the blower (Foggy morning) smoke came from behind the dash. It stopped when I turned them both off. While I can't say for sure that this was the cause, it sure is coincidental. I discovered a connection under the hood against the firewall between the hood strut and the fender in front of the driver that has wire very melted. The melted wire is gray with a green stripe and here is a picture...

I can't seem to find it in the Bentley book.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Is that on the drivers side? I too have something that looks like it has been chewed like that.

Driver's side, check!
It looks like it chewed through the wire then it shorted. I'm a bit frustrated, because I can't seem to find out what the connector connects.

If it's just the defroster type stuff, I'll disconnect it and repair it in the warmer weather.

Bentley was of no help (that I could find)

Help!

Haven't torn anything apart yet, the roads here in CT are still crappy. I was just going to use liquid electrical tape to prevent a short. Looks like they gnawed on my ground wire that bolts towards the rear of the fuel tank, also looks like some foam from one of the vent hoses.

Just a noob so I can't tell you what thats connected to, but I feel your pain.

What a bummer of a day. I wish there were a way to google a part...

Anyone know what this connector links?

Here are some more pics,
The first is from the front. You can see the left fender and the strut assy.

Thanks to all for any insight!

The plot thickens...The ground wire on the back of the fuel/oil level gauge (one of two, the other is brown) is burnt to a crisp!

What?

I recently had my original power mirrors replaced with aero, non power mirrors. Someone told me that it appears that the original heated/power mirrors are connected with a connector such as this.

Am I on the right track?

That's the right kind of connector for the heated power mirrors, but it exists inside the mirror housing.

Easiest way to find out what it's for is disconnect it and try using every accessory in the car. The one that doesn't work is what the connector is for.

Yes, those wires are for the power heated mirrors. Disconnect one, and both do not work. I'd guess that when the mirror conversion was done, they did not use the pin separator tool, but cut the wires instead. Maybe one wire was not taped up? You got one to ground, and the rest is history.

It sounds like the instruments are on the same circuit as the mirrors?

That's what I think as well. After people began telling me that it was a mirror circuit, I called the shop that installed the mirrors and the owner offered to come out to my house and help take care of the problem Sunday morning. I hope that comes to fruition. I don't need the power mirrors to work, so I'm not too concerned, but smoke pouring out of the dash scared the doo doo out of me!

Now I need to see if the circuit is the same as the gauges.

Eric, Good luck. Let me know if you need to borrow the pin extractor tool. It pushes the wires out of that connector.
