Should I sell my BMW M3...
its 95 only 60k miles, mint. Im getting the 911 itch. I like the SC and 3.2 models. My bimmer is awesome(fast, reliable and haven't driven anything that handles like it yet. Olders 911's have this certain character and distinction thats so great, not to mention i've heard that they are very reliable. It would be my daily driver.
Maintenance isn't that bad on my car, how bout these 911's?
My budget is 25k.
What do u guys think?
Am I making a mistake?
thanx, leo

The M3 is an incredible car, so it makes it tough to say what to do. I strongly considered buying one before I got my 911, but eventually emotion overcame reason and I bought the Porsche. People may get mad, and flame me for this, but an 86 M3 probably has more performance than any Porsche you can buy for $25K. Well any stock Porsche. However, after driving both I found no comparison in the amount of fun I had in the 911 compared to the M3.
With that said I will tell you this, for 25k you will probably get a Carrera 3.2 It's air conditiong won't compare to your bimmers, it will be louder(to me a good thing) it will ride worse, it will be smaller inside, you will get ridiculed more. The 911 WILL be more fun to drive. It is and feels much lighter than the M3. It is much more rewarding to drive, you actually feel like you're driving at Le Mans when you're on a twisty mountain road at sunset and the engine is wailing away behind you. The bimmer just reminds me of a gum commercial(sorry) Well anyway you get the point, drive a couple 911's and decide for yourself.
good luck,

Buy a 911. Take your time and find a good one, at least a year, or so.... Could even be a nice 73, or a decent 88, at that price.
When you have it "in garage", drive both. I still have my Beemer after 1 1/2 years and the Beemer goes to work, the 911 goes everywhere else.

My Carrera wins the "grins per mile" race every day. I also looked hard at the M3 when I got my '87 last fall - had a '80 320S a few years back as well.
As others have said, ventillation sucks, I find the shifting a bit slower (you need to be more deliberate) than I recall with BMW's (I drove a Z3 in Germany).
But everytime I go into the garage, I grin. Everytime I go on an on-ramp, I grin. Everytime I touch the throttle/brakes, I grin.
And frankly, most Porsche owners really love the marque, which makes boards like this a lot of fun. Even here in car-demented Southern California where it is hard to have a unique ride, I see very few classic Porsches.
They are very different vehicles - I would like to drive an M3, but I really like owning a Porsche.
Drop me a note if you want any specifics on late 80's Carrera costs, etc.

No question about this my friend.
They both are nice cars but 911 has something BMW doesn't have, it has more character and is 'legend'.
Good way (for you) to convince yourself of buying 911 is this:
Since you don't have 911 yet. Take one from car dealer and park it next to your BMW on a busy street where people walk, then ask from ladies (not men, they might have personal preferences etc., even though, I'm sure 90% would say yes to 911) which car they like best and which they would rather drive. Try to ask older & yonger ladies so you'll get more variety. After thiss 'poll', you take that BMW to the dealer and trade it for that 911. I quarantee, you won't regret it. BMW is a nice car, but it's just a car, Porsche is something else.
I'm sorry this is so long, but I didn't have enough time to make it shorter.

Leo, You got the answers one would expect on this board! I had two M3's 3.2 6spd (1998 and 1997), best saloon in the world! The Porsches, old ones at that, are a different ball game. I traded my M3 for a '82 911SC and I was crying for a week! Speed is everything to me and I thought this was the mistake of a lifetime. Well, I was wrong - the 911 is the best car in the world at everything it does - bar boot space. Get to know your 911 and you'll never look back. PS. My car is now the daily driver, a fully fledged race car and the Sunday / Weekend prowler. Reliable too. Regards Tom.

Hello again Leo, the change to Porsche came after a long night at the bar, there's zillions of BM's out there, but only a few 911s. After all, any boy should own a Porsche, and they DO have something special. Ask any female to choose! The SC was chosen on merits, i.e. original concept, strong engine (930 type), no fancy electrics, and basically the same performance as the 3.2 in standard trim. My car has been more reliable than the tax man, I've done some 80k km's in two years and run a fair budget, however the performance upgrades are costing me a fortune (it's a drug - I'm an addict!). M3's aren't cheap, Porsches neither. BTW my "SC" is now much faster than the M3's around the track, but thats another story. Lastly, when I've got the cash, I'll have a 911 AND a M3. Regards Tom.

The M3 is an Awsome Car, but like others mentioned, it has Character. I totaled my M3 on the track, and just bought a 85 911 Cab. The 911 does not have the comfort of a BMW nor does it have it predictable handling, but something about the 911 grabs my interest. I would suggest driving a 911 and really feeling the car out, it might not be enough to give your M3 up!
