964 Dual Mass Flywheel Part Numbers
I posted this to the Rennlist e-mail group for 911s. Here's a "cut-n-paste" of my message:
List:
As many of you familiar with the 964 know, there are two manufacturers of dual mass flywheels available for the 964s (Freudenberg was the first manufacturer, which was then replaced by LUK). The TSB that Porsche put
out regarding the replacement (or approval for use) of the Freudenberg by the LUK was number 9402 published in 1994. This particular TSB identifies the LUK to be used in both C2 and C4 versions of the 964 as part number "964 114 012 02".
I've noticed that some parts stores are selling different flywheels for the C2 and C4 (for example, one store uses a part number sequence including the number 114-011-04 for the C4 and 114-012-01 for the C2, both beyond 1990). My questions are as follows:
1. Was the TSB incomplete in identifying the "964 114 012 02" for both cars...is this really for just a C2 and there is another part number for the C4, or do both cars use the same dual mass flywheel.
2. I've also heard (unconfirmed) that there is no LUK for the C4, and that you must use a Freudenberg as a replacement.
3. I've also heard (yet another rumor) that there was, to some extent, a "fire sale" on the old Freudenbergs and that some of these part numbers that don't match the TSB may in fact be old Freudenberg flywheels that were sold to stores at prices considerably less than the newer LUK replacements.
Can anyone clarify any of this for me?
Thanks,
Bill Wagner

Bill, here's the original and superceded two-mass flywheel numbers. Format: model/year/original part number/superceded part number. ND means no date given.
M64.01/1990/964.114.011.02/964.114.012.02
M64.01 C4/ND/964.114.011.03/964.114.012.02
M64.01 C4/ND/964.114.011.04/964.114.012.02
M64.01 C2/ND/964.114.012.00/964.114.012.02
M64.01 C2/to 92/964.114.012.01/964.114.012.02
M64.01 C2/93 on/964.114.012.02
So, in answer to your questions, it looks like 964.114.012.02 is the single replacement for C2 and C4, which agrees with the TSB. The other part numbers you're seeing are the original part numbers.
