OK, guys and girls..
I'm about to take my first leap into your world. I have a budget of £12,000 and would like to buy a solid 911 (preferrably black and wide-bodied) for weekend use in dry weather only.
Initially have been looking at mid-80's 911SC Sports but would really welcome some advice and guidance with regard to models, pitfalls, no-no's etc.
Thanks,
Darren Thomson

£12k gets you into Carrera 3.2 territory. Overall the Carrera 3.2 is a better car than the SC. Both have their Achilles Heels - SC's have a problem with pulled head studs, exploding airboxes and no hydralic chain tensioners, and the 3.2 can suffer from premature value guide wear, but the 3.2 has an extra 30bhp, is more fuel-efficient and is that bit newer.
A search of the archives will bring up loads of stuff on both variants. There are also a load of great books that are invaluable to the prospective buyer. These include Paul Frere's "911 Story" and Bruce Anderson's "911 Performance Handbook".
Check out this thread on the same subject:

Broken studs maybe, but last I heard the head studs in 3.0 and 3.2 engines were the same part number. Don't be too shocked when the same thing starts happening in later cars. Hell, Thom F bought a 3.6 from a 964 and it came to him with broken head studs.

The above mentioned link (SC & Carrera) pretty much covers your question. I bought mine after 6 months of searching, it was stock, had all the needed upgrades, all the records, beautifully maintained, all the options, the right colors (black metallic over cork) and moderate mileage (109k). I've done some minor maintainence repairs (one oil return tube, sunroof seals, new headliner) and it's been great. When you buy, be sure to keep a slush fund of about 10-15% of the purchase price, and get the pre-purchase inspection on anything you are serious about...even if you walk, its money well spent. Good luck! <img src="graemlins/yltype.gif" border="0" alt="[typing]" />
